More than 4,300 coolas were found in fringe forests of Newcastle by drone survey

In a historic survey, researchers at the University of Newcastle mapped the already hidden coola population on the outskirts of Newcastle, NSW. The study estimated about 67,300 hectares of Burestland (208 sites) about 4,357 coalas. He also found more than 290 coola in the Sugarlof State Conservation Area, which is a region with some previous records.
