The National Students Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS) said on Monday that it was known about 2024 unpaid allowance for students of technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
This follows a delayed payment that was initially prescribed to 25 April 2025.
As per the plan, the condition arose from transitional challenges experienced during switch to direct payment partners and post -return of this function in NSFA during 2024 academic year.

“This transition requires a complex reconciliation process, which has been introduced concurrently with the beginning of 2025 academic year,” it said.

Here is when payment will be paid:
- Monthly TVT allowance for 2025 academic year will be paid on 25 May 2025
- A special payment for all unpaid TVET allowances from 2024 academic year will be processed on 31 May 2025
“NSFAS remains stable in its commitment to work collaboratively with this region to fulfill its obligations and faces systemic challenges to ensure efficient disbursions of eligible students.”

DHET minister in delay in NSFAS
On 28 April, Higher Education Minister, Dr. Nobul Majkain said that around 800 students were facing challenges with the transfer of money.
According to the minister, the delay was caused by “a system related to the size of the batch files”.
The payment was later processed on 26 April and was reflected in student accounts by 27 April.
“We recognize the effects of these delays as students completely depend on their allowances for living expenses.”
NKABANE said that progress has been made to address the appeals presented for 2025. The NSFAS appeal and the Tribunal Committee are currently reviewing the results to ensure continuity and appropriate policy application.
Students are encouraged to regularly check their accounts for any additional documentation requirements related to their appeal.
