The minister also said that around 800 students in “specific institutes” continue to face challenges with their fund transfer.
Higher Education Minister, Dr. Nobuhle Pamela Majkain on Sunday issued a statement addressing important issues impressing the students who rely on the National Student Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS).
The NKABANE address was mainly focused on delayed disbursement of TVET allowances and provides updates on the NSFAS appeal process.
Late NSFAS tvet allowances reach students at the end
NSFAS has issued an apology for delayed payments of TVET student allowances which were originally scheduled for 25 April.
According to the minister, the delay was caused by “a system related to the size of the batch files”.
The payment was later processed on 26 April and was reflected in student accounts by 27 April.
“We want to apologize to the inconvenience caused by delay in delay in honest allowance – the delayed payments are unacceptable,” Majakain said.
“We recognize the effects of these delays as students completely depend on their allowances for living expenses.”
The minister also said that around 800 students in “specific institutes” continue to face challenges with their fund transfer.
NSFAS has committed to resolve these outstanding issues by Wednesday.

The outstanding 2024 payment is being addressed
The minister confirmed that NSFAS is committed to settling all outstanding amounts from 2024, including payment to both students and housing providers.
NKABANE said that a detailed communication underlining the plan for these dues will be released by Wednesday.
“Access to education is not just a privilege; it is a fundamental right that facilitates personal and national development,” he emphasized in his statement.
Nsfas appeal procedure update
According to NKABANE, progress has been made to address the appeals presented for 2025, with the NSFAS appeal and the Tribunal Committee currently reviewing the results to ensure continuity and proper application of policies.
Students are encouraged to regularly check their accounts for any additional documentation requirements related to their appeal.

Solution of merit code discrepancies
NKABANE shared that the merit code has achieved a success in solving issues related to mismatch, which prevented fund disbursement to eligible students.
These discrepancies mainly influenced students enrolled in two specific National Certificates (Professional) programs.
The minister said that on April 2, 80% of the results were released at the examination centers.
He said that additional evidence is being collected by the Department of Higher Education and Training, which will be presented to Umalusi from May 5 to National Certificate (Professional) Level 2 to 4.
“Under the approval of Umalusi, we estimate the release of results on 9 May and 12 May,” said Maskain.
With solving these issues, the affected students should get their NSFAS funding without further delay.
