Fernley noticed that his Wimbledon tournament ended in the first round as he was beaten by Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseka.
The 23-year-old Fernley had never lost the opening-round match at a Grand Slam, but was dropped by his 18-year-old rival by 6-4 6-1 7-6 (7-5) by his 18-year-old rival.
This was only a second win over Fonseca’s grass, but he has caught the eye with many impressive performances this year, defeated Andree Rublav in the Australian Open in January and then Winning your first ATP tour title in February Open with Argentina.
Fernley has enjoyed her own meteorite growth in recent times, climbing from outside the top 500 a year ago to reach this tournament 51st in the world.
He had seen ready to take advantage of the first set, hitting a great overhead volley on his way to achieve three brake points.
But Fonseca took the match in a row to turn the match on his head, claiming himself a break and then served for the first set.
Fernley had no response to Fonseca in another set that lasted for just 23 minutes and although he put a battle in the third more, the teenager inspired the tie-break to progress.
