During the festive season in Gauteng, according to the provincial traffic police, a total of 242 persons have lost their lives in road accidents, marking an increase in compared to previous years. Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) spokesman Seo Maramene revealed that the number of 123 casualties was pedestrian. The primary factors contributing to the increase in road ambush have been increased by pedestrians, rapid, driving under the influence of alcohol, and careless driving, recent wet weather conditions. As Holidackers engage in New Year celebrations at various holiday locations, GTP emphasized the importance of caution for road users and estimated heavy traffic in getting closer to the new year.
Marmen emphasized the need for responsible behavior, urging the motorists to avoid consumption of alcohol on the roads, including both jewalking and drinking and driving. GTP clarified that unrighteousness would not be tolerated by the traffic police. To ensure compliance and curb of criminal activities, GTP officials and crime prevention warden is to be deployed in Gauteng, strengthening the importance of following road rules.
