Hundreds of promising youth South African people for R12.5 million raised in the inaugural Hummingbird Ball recently hosted in London will lead to the convenience of life-changing for education, mentorship and leadership development.
In memory of his sister Kai, founded by Bestseling novelist Richard Mason, the Kya Mason Foundation works to identify and nurture the leaders of yesterday. More than 26 years since Royalty from Mason’s Global Bestseller Drowning people Provides funds to send four scholars to great schools, hundreds of children from the most difficult communities in South Africa have gone through KMF programs – doctors, entrepreneurs, teachers, psychologists, lawyers and transformors travel from informal settlements to career.
Foundation, with its key offices located in Cape Town, and whose first mentor Archbishop Desmond Tutu was now calling individuals and corporates – especially in South Africa – to join life.
Whether financial assistance, mentorship, or skill-sharing, the message is clear: everyone can play a role in allowing qualified scholars to be the need of future leaders.
A call for action for South African people who want to create a real difference in the future of young people and the future of SA
“To give a lot of ways,” South African-born star of the hit show said Lucifer And KMF Board Member Leslie-N Brant. “There is clear financial donation, but if there are people who have a specific skill set and can advise a young person, then it is another valuable way to give back.”
He said, “We are planning an Hummingbird Ball in Cape Town, where I will meet the organization for more South African people. It is very important to learn and motivate influential people there. Some Richard (Mason) always tells that the happiness we get from buying a tangible item is to see a bag or a car. They support children.”
Black-tie Gala in London attracted a philanthropist, famous celebrities and an impressive crowd of leaders in business and society. The guests included Oscar winner Jeremy Iron, Amy-Vigner Tom Hollander, Sir Ben Okri and members of the British Royal family. Iron donated his bullgari wrist watch to auction, which included luxury experiences with Eddie Redmine, Joana Lumli and Bear Grills. Chris Reid added live music and philanthropist Hardy McClen, the founder of the UK’s largest private equity fund, Ronon Dune, the CEO of Vodacom and the markings of Cholamondli added to the night energy.
Each table was named after a current KMF scholar or an alumnus, depicted on custom-designed cards with his personal stories. The Mistress of Ceremony, Enthi Nadaba – a KMF Alumna, who has cut his job in finance to join the development team of the organization – embodied the impact of KMF as he led one evening of powerful story telling.
Humingbird Spirit: Everyone can do something
KMF founder Richard Mason says, “Humingbirds make impossible.” “They need to eat 24/7, yet somehow need to fly a huge distance. Some species beat their wings 5,000 times in a minute, which you have to do if you are born in a suburb a gang and want to be justice to a high court and want to judge a High Court. But Humingbirds are also beautiful, and we think about our shores.
