New Josender Ryan Fox defeated American Sam Burns in a fourth play-off hole to claim a dramatic win at the Canadian Open.
Fox submerged a Birdi in its fourth round 18th hole to establish a play-off against Burns, producing a brilliant eight-end-par-round of 62 at TPC Toronto in Oopray Valley.
Burns hit a nine Birdi and a bogey to take the clubhouse lead and it seemed that it would be sufficient to win until Fox’s heroine was on the final hole in her round of 66.
Par Five 18th was a sudden death play-off hole and Fox had to settle for a hole with his fourth shot and settle for an equal, Burns failed to capitalize because he missed a Makeable put to win the first time.
In the next attempt, Fox almost went into the water with his second shot, before the two could not be separated again because they made equal.
The hole was replaced for their third attempt, but the pair again was in equal to the fourth time before leaving.
This time, Fox produced a magnificent second shot and after Burns took five, he created a Beddy to win a second PGA Tour title behind his first victory in the last month’s Mertal Beach Classic.
“It was a very difficult fight,” said Fox. “I was very lucky to make that put in regulation (in 18th). It used to nap in the bus.
“I did not kill some great shots in the play-off and Sam let me go there for the first time.
“A good one is good to a hit that is the fourth time – this is probably the best shot I have ever hit in my life. It’s good to do it in these circumstances.”
David Skin of England produced a strong performance as he hit 67 to finish 13 under TPC Toronto in OSS Valley.
Shane Lori of Ireland started firmly with an eagle and three birdies to step into the lead under 15 before his challenge fade.
He hit the ninth, 16th and 17th holes in 67 in the round, killing a Birdi on the 13th, as he ended under 13.
