After the reopening of schools on Tuesday, the Eastern Cape Education Department announced the blitz operation targeting independent schools in the province.

The move follows public resentment to handle a sexual violence case, including a seven -year -old girl, known as CWECWE, at Bergview College, Eastern Cape.

The oversight Blitz began on Tuesday and aims to climb non-transportation and possible irregularities in private institutions that receive government subsidies.

Parliament Slam delays CWECWE case

The committee questioned the response to the delay from the school principal, which failed to alert the authorities soon after he became aware of the alleged attack.

“We are not satisfied with the explanation,” said the Chairperson of the Acting Committee, Seduknalo Tshaepo Luv.

“We will immediately oversee the Eastern Cape for a visit to that school. It is an independent school that receives a government subsidy. They must have an account.”

Luv insisted that the matter had attracted the attention of the country and exposed the interval in the supervision of independent schools.

“This tragic incident has not only shaken the community, but has also raised important questions about the safety and welfare of our children,” he said.

Blitz to apply compliance

The committee heard that the Act of South African schools was incorrectly followed.

As part of its response, the Provincial Education Department has initiated an inspection blitz on independent schools.

The goal is to ensure national policies, safety standards and employees compliance of veating procedures.

“We should advocate strict measures to prevent such events in future,” Luv said.

“The urgency of these measures cannot be eliminated.”

Charges and monitoring failure

According to the committee, the principal was made aware of the incident to join CWECWE On 14 October 2024 but the circuit manager failed to report it.

The incident came to the attention of the department only on 19 November, when a CT-blower alerted the officers. By then, an entire month had passed.

The principal claimed that he reported the case to the South African Police Service and Thuthuzella Care Center, but no documents were found to confirm it.

Meanwhile, three staff members were requested to undergo DNA tests. One of them – Principal – refused to comply.
