Famous vit starkfontin caves provide a more educational experience

The world famous Wit Steckerchfontin Caves officially opened again at a function on Tuesday, 15 April. Special programs are planned for the period of early week. This important peliytological site now infection for complete management of the University of Vitwatorsrand (VITS University).

Wits Sterkfontein about caves

It is a dolomite cave system that began 30 million years ago. This includes a series of underground chambers and routes. The total mapped cave system is more than 2.5 km and it is located 50 km north of Johannesburg within the United Nations’ educational, scientific and cultural organization the Cradle of Human beings.

The cave system has obtained discoveries of revolutionary peliosaines, including Mrs. Place (1947) and almost full legs skeletons (1994–1998). It has more than 700 homeinid samples 3.67 million years.

Importance of caves

Limestone caves, which formed several millions of years ago, preserved important evidence of our relatives. Their remains fell into deep caves through long, narrow shaft. For more than three million years, many other animals living on the cradle of homeinins and mankind’s landscape have deposited underground in heavy deposits. It created a fossil record, with several million years of human development.

Wits Stecrutin Caves hold exceptional universal values, leading to his designation in 1999 as part of the cradle of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site. Their scientific importance cannot be eliminated. They continue new discoveries that shape our understanding of who we are and where we come from.

New research and educational experience

Previously, the caves served mainly as a tourist destination, which attracts the number of international and local visitors. Remaginated Wits Stecofonin Caves will now offer a more immersive research and educational experience. It will bring visitors closer to science that has defined the site for about 100 years.

Dean of VITS Faculty of Science Professor Nitay Chetty said: “It represents an important development of how we share the story of human origin. Visitors now have unique opportunities to connect with active live science and research, all are happening in real time,”

Dr. Job Kibi will now serve as heads of vit starkfontin caves, under new management. He will oversee daily operations and visitor experiences. Research activities will continue to be led as a research permit holder by Professor Dominic Stratford.

Increased visitor will facilitate experience:

• Direct interaction with scientists and students doing research;

• Rear visual access to fossil preparation laboratories;

• Directed tourism of vit starkfontin caves with a decorated scientific context;

• Educational programs focus on human development and peliynthropology, as well as other scientific subjects in Earth science, such as climate science and geology; And

• Displays the latest discoveries and research findings.

“The opening of the vit starkfontene caves represents an exciting opportunity to bridge the difference between the understanding of state -of -the -art research and science.

“By making science more accessible, we hope that we help the next generation researchers, while helping everyone to connect more deeply with our shared human story,” said Professor Zublice, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Vits University.
