Gang related violence increases in orange form schools

Chiloni insisted that the students involved in the gang -related activities would have to face formal disciplinary action.

Matome Chiloane has called for immediate community intervention for education in Gauteng after recent gang violence in schools at Orange Farms.

Last Friday, on April 11, there was a stabbing incident at Thitha Secondary School, allegedly a student and a known gang member. As an act of vengeance, on Monday, gang members allegedly targeted the same disciple.

According to the department, a similar incident involving four students was reported on Wednesday at the Vulnindlela Secondary School.

“A grade 11 learner unfortunately stabbed and went to the clinic, while the grade 10 criminal was caught by school petrollers and is currently in police custody,” it said.

There were no fatal in events.

The department expressed serious concern over the impact of violence on school education and the good of students.

The department said, “Due to increased stresses and ongoing security concerns, school education has been disrupted not only in Thata Secondary but also in nearby primary schools,” the department said.

Fast action from officials

In response, in collaboration with South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Education Department has deployed regular patrolling in the affected areas and started searching in both schools.

Students and employees have also been sent to psychological aid teams to provide assistance to traumatized students.

The department said, “The learners are encouraged to return to school as the police have committed to patrol their schools.”

According to the department, school governing bodies (SGBs) in both institutions will suspend students implicated and start disciplinary procedures.

Chilon further emphasized that any student involved in the gang -related activity would face immediate suspension and formal disciplinary action.

He said, “We condemn all acts of violence and gang activity in and around the school premises. We are committed to ensure that our schools remain safe for learning and development,” he said.

MEC also urged parents, parents and local residents to play an active role in maintaining discipline and supporting security initiatives.

“We all ask parents, parents and community members to work with the department to support discipline and efforts to protect the future of their learners. Our learners deserve the environment free from fear and violence,” Chiloni said.
