No adding: no more than 400 schools teach mathematics

It is the largest number of schools without mathematics.

The Department of Basic Education has revealed that 464 schools in South Africa do not offer mathematics as a subject.

In a written parliamentary answer written by MP Mandla Chilabana, Basic Education Minister Shivwe Guarube said that there are the largest number of schools without mathematics in Quazulu-Natal.

These schools still provide mathematical literacy.

Number of public schools not offering mathematics

  • Quazulu-Natal: 135
  • Eastern Cape: 84
  • Limpopo: 78
  • Western Cape: 61
  • North West: 31
  • Gauteng: 31
  • Northern Cape: 19
  • Free State: 14
  • Mpumalanga: 11

Why there is no math

According to the minister, the department advises students to select their desired subject sections along with parents and schools.

“While mathematics remains a high-primary subject, there may not be enough resources or demands to offer both school-particularly small people-dung and mathematical literacy,” he said.

Gwarube highlighted the following challenges, as as the main reasons for no mathematics.

  • Limited enrollment in the stream of mathematics, it becomes inaccessible to run a full class.
  • Lack of qualified mathematics teachers; And
  • Budget or time -time obstacles that limit the subject offerings.

Interference

Gwarube stated that DBE actively promotes mathematics offer in all schools, which have major intervention.

“Schools and learners are encouraged to constantly select mathematics on mathematical literacy, where suitable is. Mathematics is also supported by provinces in strengthening teacher capacity and learner performance.

He said, “The ongoing commercial development involves focusing on functioning, with the aim of enhancing the learner in mathematics,” he said.

According to the department, many strategic intervention has been implemented, many of which are aligning with recent global and regional assessments, including:

  • Mathematics, Science and Technology Conditional Grants Support
  • Triplates with Higher Education Department and Department of Science, Technology and Innovation
  • Taunt focus school program
  • Mother tongue-based bilingual education
  • Strengthening the foundation phase and early childhood development
  • Review of post -provision criteria
  • Course support and strengthening resources
  • Teaching and learning time

“These measures are part of our comprehensive strategy to improve learned participation and performance in mathematics and ensure that more schools are equipped and encouraged to offer the subject,” Gwarube concluded.
