Search for human remains in a carpet in free state

On Wednesday, the authorities in the free state were left surprised when human remains were exposed in the backyard of a residence. The remnants wrapped in a carpet were discovered in a trapped grave, causing the local police to panic.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mamko Mofing, family members living at home alerted the police station about the suspected grave. “On December 27, 2023, around 8 am, two people visited the Makwen police station and reported something buried in their backyard. He claimed that he appeared as a sinking grave,” Mofing explained.

On reaching the place, the police found that the tomb was already excavated with a hoe, a dirty carpet was revealed. Inside, a human skull, a pair of jeans, and a football T-shirt were discovered. A family member gave clothes as his younger brother, who was from Lesotho’s neighboring country and was last seen in October 2021.

The family revealed that he had not informed the brother about the disappearance earlier, as he had a history of disappearing for an extended period before returning. Mophiring said, “An inquiry has been initiated to detect the cause of death and identify the person with remains.” The purpose of the investigation is to throw light on the circumstances around this disturbing discovery.
