The Commission for promotion and protection of the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic communities has called for an investigation and arrest in response to the recent deaths of the initiative in the Eastern Cape. The Commission has planned to call to address the crisis around the deaths of 28 initiatives in the province next month, emphasizing the accountability of law and lack of enforcement in traditional practices.
Expressing concern over the situation, the Commission urged the law enforcement agencies to thoroughly examine the people responsible for the deaths of the beginnings and catch them. Despite several busyness with traditional leaders, the Commission referred to failure to take preventive action.
Earlier this month, Premier Oscar Mabuyen called law enforcement to intensify efforts against criminals targeting initiation schools to criminals. The incidents included killing three brothers and another initiation injury in MNTLA location, as well as rape charges against a traditional nurse in Ward 5 Emalahleni in Cacadu.
Commission Chairman K Chairman K. Professor David Mosoma highlighted the legal responsibility of traditional leaders to ensure the security of the initiative within his jurisdiction, as determined by the Customery Diksha Act of 2021. He emphasized the need for serious sentences for crimes committed during initiation, including negligence, botchened circulation, and penal emportation.
Premier Mabayen outlined the provincial government’s efforts to enhance monitoring systems through ward-based initiation forums, community development workers and traditional leaders. Despite expressing condolences to the families of the deceased initiative, he confirmed the province’s commitment to ensure a safe initiation season and promised to remove any danger for its success.
