Recall stems from a defect that affects the front passenger airbag module.
The Volkswagen Group South Africa has informed the National Consumer Commission (NCC) that it is recalling polo and Taigo vehicles purchased in 2022 and 2024.
The 2008 Consumer Protection Act 68 protects consumers from threats and ensures their good and safety by controlling the product memories. If a product is considered insecure or creates a possible risk to the public, NCC may remember one.
What’s wrong with cars?
Cars are being called back due to the defective part in the gas generator of the front passenger airbag module.
“In the event of an accident with the deployment of the front airbag, the front passenger may have a low protective effect by the airbag and the passenger may increase the risk of injury.
“In addition, gas generator housing may explode, or gas generator housing components may be loose and causes serious or fatal injuries for vehicle living,” NCC said.

How many cars are affected?
VW told NCC that 142 polo and eight Taiger cars are affected. 141 polo cars were made available for sale at the national level from 20 December 2022.
From 29 January 2024, a polo and eight tago cars were made available for sale.
The affected consumers are advised to take the following steps:
1. The front passengers neutralize the airbag.
2. The use of the front passenger seat should be avoided.
3. For check, submit a vehicle to any VWSA-approved dealer and if necessary, replacement of affected components.
First remembrance of polo
This is not the first recall of the Polo model. Central May Polo sedan, sold at national level From 2 April 2025, there were parts of recalling other cars.
VW informed the NCC that the latch plates for the rear seatbelt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in a state of powerful recession (accident or hard braking), “may have low retention or protective effects and an increased risk of injury may increase.”
There are 905 polo with this issue. Those who purchased the car during the period should contact an approved Volkswagen dealer for checks and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components.
